Islets review
Iko is off on an adventure to become a brave warrior! Except, well, it’s not really going so well. He hasn’t actually fought any bad guys and maybe he should just give up and go home. Or at least that’s what his nemesis Snoot tells him he should do. Right before ruining his plane and making him crash land on an island. What a jerk.
That’s ok though. The island is what we’ve been looking for! The world as Iko knows it has been separated into five islands, and he (and all the other warriors) is trying to find the magnetic cores to reunite the islands and bring balance back to the world.
Islets is an excellent metroidvania with a huge world to explore and charming characters to meet. I didn’t realise how much I had missed playing a good 2D platformer metroidvania until I started uncovering the world of Islets. The map is huge! So, that means there is a lot of time to explore and find out just what happened to this fractured world.
It would have been amazing if the game was combat free, but it’s not. There are many enemies and quite a lot of boss fights, but there are also difficulty settings, so you can make it easier if exploration is what you’re here for.
If, like me, you’re (im)patiently waiting for Silksong to be released, this is a fantastic game to play for that Hollow Knight feel, and definitely brings a lot to the genre.
Already played Islets? The dev recently released Crypt Custodian. I played the demo during a previous Steam Next Fest and it looks like it’s another excellent game!
